PROJECTNEWS

Ballarat Station's bluestone goods shed is a step closer to being restored and reopened to the public, with the Heritage Victoria application for redevelopment works placed under consideration on 11 July 2017.

The goods shed has suffered from years of water damage, termite infestation, vandalism and deterioration.  The Heritage Victoria application outlines a comprehensive schedule of works to preserve the building's unique heritage characteristic while responsibly rehabilitating the site.

Once complete, the goods shed will help attract more private and public events to Ballarat's CBD, which will lead to an increase in visitors and boost in local spending.

Visit Regional Development Victoria to see the final concept plan.

Background

Located in the heart of Ballarat, the Ballarat Station is a gateway to the city, a CBD landmark and one of the grandest Victorian-era station buildings in the State.

The Ballarat Railway Precinct is an underutilised strategic parcel of land within Ballarat's CBD that plays a pivotal role as a gateway for public transport, significantly contributing to connectivity within, to and from Ballarat.  The revitalisation of the Precinct will improve the land use and transport outcomes as well as stimulate the Ballarat CBD economy and provide enourmous community benefits.

In January 2015. the Victorian Government pledged up to $25 million towards the delivery of the project, in partnership with the private sector.  The total investment will inject more than $40 million into the regional economy. On 29 November 2016, the Government announced the selection of the Pellicano Group as the successful consortium to deliver the project - an integrated mixed use community, commercial and transport precinct.  The consortia members include:

  • Pellicano Group (Developer and Owner)
  • DBI Design (Project Architect)
  • Quest (Anchor tenant and Hotel Operator)
  • Spotless Group (Anchor tenant and Operator of the Good Shed Convention Centre)

Key features

  • A 4.5 star Quest hotel with 77 rooms
  • A modern and flexible conference centre with adjoining retail and dining options
  • A new two-level commuter car park with 270 car spaces
  • Internal road access and pedestrian improvements
  • Public plaza for community events
